The Autumn Leaves of Red and Gold

Comments (12)

One of my friends recently made a remark about how much she dislikes autumn. I consider autumn to be my favorite season, so I replied by saying so. My friend perked up and said, "Really? Why?" Either I haven't actually thought this out in a long time or my need for a vacation is greater than I thought, but regardless, I couldn't really give a good answer. I love back-to-school shopping, I love my birthday (which I consider the start of fall), I love scarves and hats and blankets, etc. When I got to the end of a list not much longer than that one, my friend stepped back and frowned.

"I was hoping you'd give me a reason to like fall, but you really haven't."

I decided then and there that I would rush home and write up a hundred great things to love about autumn, but I have barely had time to read one hundred words.

So I'm outsourcing a little. If there are any autumn-lovers in the bunch, I'd love to hear your defense of what is clearly the best season. If you live in a place that doesn't actually have seasons, tell me how you cope without the cool breezes and warm colors of fall. If you don't like autumn, let's trade weather! I'll give you my February and March in return for your September and October.

P.S. The picture really has nothing to do with the post. The sunset was just really pretty this evening.

I literally have never heard anyone say they dislike autumn. I didn't even know that was a thing. :D

I love autumn because of the welcome relief from the blast of hellish hot air that is summer. I love the crisp cool nights and I love watching the bright greens of summer turn to the warm golds and reds of fall. But then, I'm a weirdo and hate warm weather, so what do I know?

I know, right? Her major complaints, from what I could gather, are that the days are too short and that the other side of fall brings a seemingly endless string of colorless, bitterly cold days and snow. (As much as I enjoy a break of cooler weather, I do wish I could have a longer autumn, a month-long winter, a week-long spring, and a longer summer.)

While I am a winter man myself (nothing quite like a fresh layer of snow ...), I think that autumn tends to have some of the best star gazing nights. Plus, you get the early winter sky and there is just something I find comforting about the "winter" constellations.

Autumn also has a kind of pleasantly worn feel to it, like your favorite chair or older shoes. Not too old though, sort of just right. It is a feeling that permeates the season. Basically, if winter is a graveyard or a long, lazy night, then autumn is antiquing or a used book shop.

That last sentence deserves some sort of award.

  • Beautiful colors as the leaves change
  • Drinking hot drinks like tea, cider, and coffee (enjoyable most of the year for me, but especially so with crisp weather)
  • Bonfires
  • Camping
  • Hoodies

Everything that Brooke said, and Gregor's last bullet.

Also, Gregor's Last Bullet should be a movie or a band or a book or something.

Hahaha. I approve of this idea.

Oh I think everyone has covered it in the comments!! Fall is BY FAR my favorite season and I cannot fathom disliking it! The crisp, cool, clear air... Hoodies... Sweaters... Jeans... Changing leaves... Football & marching bands (don't follow any teams but I still love the feel of the sport)... Pumpkin- & apple-flavored everything... Thanksgiving... Comfort food... Blankets... Guess I made my own list anyway. =) What's NOT to love?!?
