Or Maybe a Weekend of Sims

Sims 4 is only available for Windows, which I discovered after purchasing the game on my MacBook Pro and downloading the Origin game-distribution software and fighting with OS X to let me install Origin and then staring in disbelief at a "this game cannot be played, sucker" message, not unlike the saga shared in the latest episode of Rage Quit (disclaimer: language is NSFW).

This is obviously heartbreaking news, since I love the entire Sims series and don't really have a decent Windows machine at the moment to enjoy the new content. However, I must admit that I cackled a bit at the idea of EA snubbing Apple so boldly. Adam and I were discussing this via text message while I waited for Sims 3 and some expansion packs to re-install (obvs), and I think we've both chosen well:

Me: EVEN THE SOUNDTRACK IS WINDOWS ONLY.
Adam: :( WUT
Me: THE GREAT BATTLE OF OUR TIME HAS BEGUN. EA VS. APPLE. CHOOSE SIDES NOW.
Adam: Ick. I choose BioWare.
Me: I choose a mortal life.
Adam: I choose you, Pikachu!

Incidentally, bestfriendboy and I discussed this matter last night as he recently got a MacBook and also wanted to play Sims 4 but found that it's not working on a Mac. I can't even understand this, it's so dumb, especially these days when Macs are more popular than they once were. Weird.

It's a huge disappointment, but some of the biggest games I've played (World of Warcraft, Sims 3, etc.) all play beautifully in Windows and horrendously in OS X. I don't know why that is, but I'd start by pointing the finger at Apple. They have that "our way or the highway" mentality, and they play their cards very close to the vest. Both of those things provide a very consistent and beautiful user experience in an all-Apple world, but they must be a pain in the butt for multi-platform game developers.

Ultimately, I think EA lowered their standards by releasing Sims 3 for Mac, and I'm glad they didn't make the same mistake with Sims 4, even if that means I can't play it just yet. *tiny sigh*
